Putting Others First

Philippians 2:4 (ESV) says, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” This verse is a little bit like Paul’s golden rule, and it sums up his message in the second chapter of Philippians. Humility is about setting aside our own desires and prioritizing and elevating others.

Today’s invitation is simple, ask the Holy Spirit to help you learn humility more deeply. Please don’t just read this prompt and immediately try and be humble in your own strength. You might be able to pull it off, but there will be no heart transformation.

Instead, after reading this post, spend a few moments in prayer. Just ask God to help you understand and receive this insight. The Holy Spirit is not one to pass up an opportunity to transform our lives. He is always ready and engaged in our spiritual development and our ongoing freedom.

Ask the Holy Spirit to:

  1. Show you where you are putting yourself first.

  2. Show you the root of your behavior.

  3. Give you the humility to put others first.

  4. See the way Jesus modeled this for us.

If you read on to Philippians 2:6-11, you’ll see exactly what Paul is talking about. Jesus is the ultimate example of humility. He set aside the interest of his heavenly glory and communion with the Father to become a man, experience hardship, and give his life as a sacrificial offering. Jesus shows us humility in the way he emptied himself and died on a cross.

God, show us how to live like you today.
