Come To God

“But I, O Lord, cry to you; in the morning my prayer comes before you.” —Psalm 88:13

We can come to God with our needs. He will listen and engage with us in our striving for rest. Even when he seems distant, his hand is active in our lives.

God desires a relationship with us. He’s not a tyrant king annoyed with the shortcomings of his subjects. He is a gracious Father bent on raising his children to live in freedom and dignity.

Developing a simple rhythm of prayer in the morning is a rhythm of grace.

Each morning, we come to God with our prayers. “God, I need you to work in my life today.” We tell him the things we are facing, the challenges of yesterday that we can’t overcome, the state of our hearts we are trying to discern, and the hardships of those we love around us.

We lay it all out before God.

It is challenging to have an abiding relationship with God if we only highlight the good things. Thankfulness and praise are cornerstone elements of a prayer life, but we can hardly say we are walking in God’s grace if we don’t take the time to present our needs before him.

This is in no way a selfish pursuit. It is a humble recognition that we can only find freedom through the strength God provides and the solutions he offers. God wants us to come to him in prayer.

God doesn’t need us to send him a letter informing him of our condition. In Matthew 6:8 ESV, Jesus taught us, “Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” Instead, presenting our needs before God daily sets our minds on walking through each moment of the day with grace and abundance instead of fear and scarcity.

Come before him today with your prayers for help. Set your requests before his throne daily. In the family of God, the burdens of the children are the business of the Father.

God, I’m here to seek you and to know you. I trust that you are listening as I present my requests. Help me through this day. I want to walk with you in your presence.
