Hold Fast To God
“Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name.”
—Psalm 91:14
Turn to God with wholehearted devotion today. Hold fast to him. Desperately cling to the Lord.
I often think about how our freedom in Christ, our authority in prayer, and our victory over every enemy have more to do with how close we are to God than anything else. Knowledge, experience, and resources are helpful, but proximity to God is the most significant indicator of spiritual greatness.
It’s hard to get near to God when your heart is lifted up to an idol. Despite the insane glory and beauty of the Lord, our short-sighted pursuits block our perspective of God’s splendor and truth.
Getting close to the Lord is difficult when our minds are fixed on sinful desires, complaining, and fear. What we dwell upon will soon become our dwelling place.
When we reach to hold fast to God, every single hindrance is quickly exposed. When we step out of the shadows and let God’s light shine on us, we can see every broken area of our hearts. We know how deeply unworthy we are of God’s glory and how desperately we need him.
Still, God invites us to hold onto him for deliverance's sake. In becoming holy and free like Christ, we only have one assignment: shedding the “old man” to take on the new creation.
Ephesians 4:22-24 lays out this truth, saying, “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”
The whole point of the journey of holiness is to lay down that which is perishing to take on that which is eternal. This only happens when we run to God, trusting fully in his grace to forgive, heal, and restore us.
The reward is exactly what you would expect from a loving Father. When my son runs to me and grabs me by the leg because he’s afraid, I only want to scoop him into my arms and protect him in my embrace. The Father is no different. His heart of love and compassion always responds with such great affection to his kids.
Hold onto the Lord.
God, I trust that you love me and accept me in my weakness. I’m running to you because I know you are the only one worthy of my love and attention. I know you are the only one who can heal and renew me. Take my brokenness and make me whole. Turn my ashes into beauty. I need your protection in my life. I praise you for your love and goodness.
