The Faithful God
Deuteronomy 7:9 (ESV) Says, “Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.”
God is in this for the long haul. His promise is sure for a thousand generations.
I love this verse because it draws me to the truth with the intense focus and clarity of the declaration. In the faith journey, these anchor verses can help us continually return to the reality of who God is to us.
Will you receive this declaration today?
Scripture declares, “Know therefore that the LORD your God is God.” Reread this verse if necessary and consider what is happening in your heart. When you read these words, are you encouraged in your current assignment? Are you provoked to repentance? Do you experience a sobriety that we might call the fear of the Lord? Do you sense a renewed authority over the enemy and the distractions that come our way?
An excellent practice of abiding is allowing the Bible to be a mirror to our souls. These words themselves have been passed down through generations so that we can read them today in our own language and receive the truth of God.
How radical is it that we are contemplating the words that Yahweh spoke to Moses thousands of years ago? Could that simple reality reframe the significance of God’s words in Deuteronomy?
Through the rise and fall of empires in history, the good and bad of religious endeavors, and political, social, and cultural revolutions, we can still know that God is God—the faithful God.
I don’t know about you, but I want to align myself with this faithful God. Deuteronomy is clear that if we want to live under the banner of his covenant and steadfast love, we must love him and keep his commandments.
So today, as we respond to the power of God’s identity as the faithful God, we are compelled to examine our lives and ponder how we can continue to love and obey God’s commandments. Jesus makes it plain for us that this happens only through the power of the Holy Spirit as we abide in him. Apart from him, we can do nothing.
He is the faithful God! Love him, seek his ways, obey his commandments, and live in freedom.
