Do You See God?

In Matthew 5:8 NIV, Jesus says, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”

Do you see God?

The pure in heart are simply those whose lives are not cluttered by the distractions of the world, the gratification of the flesh, or the burdens of the heart.

Interestingly, it is a purity of heart that opens our eyes. I think of another saying of Jesus found in Matthew 6:22-23 NIV, where he says, “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”

Consider for a moment how dark the darkness of life outside of Christ really is. It’s like when your eyes finally adjust to the darkness in the middle of the night. Trying to find goodness outside of the purity of God's light is like trying to determine which shadow is the brightest. It is futile to the core and nothing like the radiant light of dawn.

A concerted look at the world reveals that sin, oppression, and death are so utterly pervasive that “light” is determined by varying shades of grey. Oh, that God’s church would be turned away from the patterns of darkness and live as children of the day! Do you desire to increase in purity of heart to could walk in the light of Christ?

Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 5:5 NIV, “You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.” Again, in Philippians 2:15 NIV, he writes, “that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.”

Can you see today that your inheritance is light? Your inheritance is to see God, and to see God is to be known by God.

God has invited us to the purity of the light. He paid for your redemption with the blood of his son Jesus. Colossians 1:13-14 ESV says, “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

Pause today and ask God to give you a pure heart. Receive his redemption and look up to see God has invited you to live in the light.
