God Wants You To Seek Him

God wants you to seek him. Right now. In every moment. God wants you to seek him out.

He wants you to search his word for the truth of the gospel and the depths of his love.

He wants you to store up his promises in your heart.

He wants you to sing him a song, a hymn, and a new song.

He wants you to pray and seek his face.

He wants you to ask him for divine power to win the spiritual battle.

He wants you to look to him for guidance in every moment.

He wants you to seek him.

You have said, “Seek my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, Lord, do I seek.”

Psalm 27:8 ESV

I do not want to put undue pressure on hearing the voice of God (although I am firmly convinced that all believers can and do hear from God). The details and explanation of how God speaks to his people are a mystery. Just like the means by which he manifests his glory among his people is an unspeakable yet deeply real thing, more real than any outward religious ritual we can conceive. However, in the same way that worship is idle without the infusion of God’s spirit, our personal walk of faith is idle without the presence of God’s voice.

So when God says through his servant King David, “Seek my face,” We must not immediately assume that the words of God are for David only. Perhaps we might hear such a command, first through the revelation of the word and second through the agreeing and affirming impressions of the Holy Spirit on our hearts. Is David saying that he alone was invited to seek God’s face? Or is he testifying about a God that personally calls to his people to seek his face and be known by him?

In our seeking of God in his word, we discover that the promises of God and his invitation to know him echo and multiply through generations to speak to our hearts at this moment. Knowing this, do we have the faith to believe that God’s word is not just a record of what has been said but a container of what is still being said?

What do we say about Jesus’ words in Matthew 7:5 ESV, saying, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”

The words of Christ are in perfect agreement with the testimony of David. The rhythm of faith in God looks like an invitation to seek and response in seeking. To know God is to search him out, only to find that he is the one searching us out. This is the Parable of the Lost Sheep.

Jesus says to seek him. Psalm 27 and Matthew 7 work together because Jesus speaks of the Kingdom's revelation, and David speaks at the level of the heart. Jesus instructs us with his authority, granting us confidence that it is our privilege and command to seek him. David models a life of intimacy with God born out of seeking and being found.

Knowing that God wants you to seek him, respond in confident faith. Look to Psalm 27 as a playbook for prayer. Look to Matthew 7 as an invitation to seeking. Then simply begin to seek. Imitate one or more of the methods of seeking from the list above, or find some other way to seek God. Pursue God in confident hope through his word and by his spirit and let your life be a daily walking in his presence.
