I John 1:1 | The Word of Life
We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life.
1 John 1:1 NLT
Sometimes abiding is as simple as remembering Jesus. He is the Word of life.
Spirituality is a deeply personal aspect of our lives. I’m convinced that God speaks to each of us in unique ways that only we can perceive. He gives unique gifts to each of us and calls us to a unique purpose for our lives to partner with his kingdom.
When we pause to seek him and grow in our faith, it can be easy to jump right past remembrance and move to our spiritual checklist. Instead of beginning by remembering how radical it is to know the name of Jesus and to be invited to know God intimately, we might rush to resolve the spiritual grievances of our lives.
We all have requests we long to put before God. And I’m not necessarily saying it is inappropriate to rush into the throne room with our broken hearts assign for God’s help. However, when we go long enough forgetting to simply bask in the presence and glory of God, we tend to forget the power of who we are coming before.
I find that whenever I set aside my burdens and needs to just abide in God’s presence, I discover that he already knows what I need. He has already considered the difficulties of my life, and he already has the desire in his heart to bring transformation and growth.
To God, the issues of our lives are small things to manage. We come before the God who has already overcome death, sin, and the grave. He heals the sick, raises the dead, and frees the spiritually oppressed. He has more resources than the sum total of the Earth’s wealth. He is the maker of the universe! God is never intimidated by our issues, failures, or lack. So when we come to him as sons and daughters, setting aside our needs, to be with him, we participate in a prophetic act of faith. By coming before him in simplicity, we are declaring that he is a faithful provider.
Surely, there are times when we have such pressing needs that we need to lay them at his feet. God never discourages asking and calling on him, but when we call on God, we should know in faith that he is listening and already engaged in our story.
Today, you are invited to come before the Word of life. He is hope, healing, and peace. John brought us this testimony in his letter so that we would read and believe. The invitation is more than an intellectual recognition. Read this promise that John writes in his gospel account. In John 14:23 ESV, Jesus says, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”
Do you believe today that God desires to make his home with you? This is the radical invitation of abiding daily. God longs to be with you in every moment of your life. He wants to make your heart his home. God is invested so much more in our lives than we can understand or imagine.
The power of the scripture is that it often serves as a portal to the realm of heaven. While 1 John 1:1 is just a simple series of words, the truth of Jesus’ name as the Word of life will lead us to encounter God’s presence and glory. There is no secret equation! For generations, God’s people have simply called on his name, experienced the infilling of the Holy Spirit, and grown in revelation and freedom. You are invited today to know the Word of life.
