Psalm 27:8 | When God Calls

You have said, “Seek my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, Lord, do I seek.”

Psalm 27:8 ESV

This verse in Psalm 27:8 is puzzlingly simple. It illustrates the conversation of prayer, the importance of listening, and the rhythm of responding to God.

Prayer is incomplete if we are the only ones doing the talking, yet it is just as incomplete when all we do is listen and soak in God’s presence. Any relationship is strengthened and grown through conversations. Sometimes one person says more than the other, but both are engaged in sharing and listening.

Sometimes doubt, shame, and worthlessness creep into our minds to convince us that God isn’t interested in speaking with us. These lies put us in a place where, for some reason, we think we want to get to God more than he wants to get to us. This verse reminds me that God is always the one who initiates the relationship.

There are moments in life where God seems distant and others where he becomes suddenly close. I have found that many times when I suddenly encounter God, it is because I started listening. Sure, God has a pattern of interrupting people, like appearing to Paul on the road to Damascus. There are plenty of times when God breaks through into a situation to bring leadership and transformation. However, I don’t see this pattern displayed in the lives of people who are already chosen and called by God. I see prophets declaring the promises of a God who longs for his people to return to them. The prophets have a consistent message: won’t you stop what you’re doing and listen to your God?

When we respond to God, we often find that he is closer than we imagined. There are so many reasons why we might feel disconnected from God, weariness, sin, offense, unforgiveness, hurts and wounds, and more. No matter what our condition, God’s invitation is the same. He says, “Seek my face.” When we see God, we experience healing and restoration. We find who we are in him—chosen and beloved by God.

Seek to see God, to encounter him, and to know him. All that is needed in response is a simple “yes” from your heart. Lean into the rhythm of responding to God today. Pause and listen to his invitation written in Psalm 27:8, and respond by seeking God’s face.
