Freed By The Son
“The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. ”
What makes the Christian gospel stand out against other messages of hope? What do we claim that no other religion can claim? What have we received that makes this way unique? Why is your pursuit of freedom this morning any different from anyone else in the world?
The answer is Jesus.
It is so easy for us to follow human pursuits and try to strive our way into freedom and salvation. In John 8, Jesus explains how useless this path is. He explains that those who operate as a slave will never get the inheritance of the house. They may work tirelessly, serve nobly, and remain extremely loyal, but apart from their adoption, they exist outside of the family line.
The hope of the gospel is that Jesus is searching us out like the lost sheep in Luke 15. He longs to meet us with the spirit of adoption and restoration, but the message is simple: freedom comes from receiving what the Son gives, not earning our place.
The Son already operates from a position of legacy. He is the rightful heir of God the Father’s inheritance. Therefore, he is the only one who can administer the will of his father. It is not enough to strive for Christian perfection. We must encounter the Son and be set free.
Today I invite you to meditate on what is going on in your inner world. Where have you been striving to enter God’s kingdom that you need to surrender and ask the Son to come set you free? Where are you in need of deliverance and restoration? Ask God to help you. Call out to him. Confess that all your striving will mean nothing outside of his word of freedom over your life.
The beautiful thing is that God does not reject us. We call out to him from our position of bondage and fear, and he enters into our reality with grace, truth, and life. This is the gospel, but freedom can only come through the Son.
Today we seek the Lord for deeper freedom and healing, and we worship the Son for being so, so good.
