Delighting in God's Word
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. ”
We live in a culture obsessed with prosperity. The culture measures prosperity by how much money, popularity, sex, pleasure, possessions, health, and comfort a person has. Psalm 1:1-3 offers the alternative path towards prosperity. It offers the path towards God’s definition of prosperity: him dwelling in & with us.
How do we get to the point of wanting God’s version, rather than the world’s version of prosperity? According to Psalm 1:1-3, We delight in and meditate on God’s word day and night.
When we daily take time to slowly, prayerfully, and intentionally read God’s Word we discover God’s will and ways for every aspect of life. The Bible is not an instruction manual. It is the very transcript of God’s soul, revealing who He is, who we are, and his deepest desires for us. It reveals God’s version of prosperity and connects us to his heart.
Many of us may feel like it is impossible to actually enjoy and meditate on God’s word day and night. We may feel too busy, too discouraged, and too distracted. God’s Word may feel boring, burdensome, and restrictive.
Regardless of what we feel, God wants to infuse us with fresh faith to believe that it is possible to actually enjoy God’s Word and daily spend time meditating on it. To take it for what it says and honor God by obeying it.
I invite you to ask Holy Spirit to help you determine what is holding you back from enjoying and daily meditating on God’s Word. I invite you to ask him to help you see what you are delighting in and giving your time to instead of God’s Word.
I invite you to ask the Holy Spirit to help you enjoy and meditate (slowly and prayerfully reading) on God’s Word daily. Finally, I invite you to receive the promise of Psalm 1:3 for those who delight in and meditate on God’s Word day and night:
He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
