Abiding God
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.”
The disciples were with Jesus in the last moments of his life. Jesus was communicating the final things this group needed to know before he went on to the cross and things would never be the same. When John records moments from this night, he is intentionally capturing the heart of the Master for the disciples, and for us.
Unsurprisingly, Jesus talks endlessly about love. He brings reassurances and guidance for what to do when he ascends. Jesus even washes their feet, shares what we now call communion, and leads them in a hymn. It must have been a beautiful and powerful time.
We base so much of our writing off of what Jesus said in John 15. The English Standard Version uses the word abiding throughout these chapters and it has always captured our heart as the essence of what a relationship with the Lord looks like.
It is so easy to make abiding all about what we do to get the Lord’s attention or affection. Our devotional time and prayer time can become consumed with doing things for the Lord. Offering up our time in commitment to reading the word and lifting prayers to bless the Lord and cover others, we might start to think that these things are the essence of abiding.
In reality, the essence of abiding is that we have an abiding God.
John 14:23 ESV, Jesus said, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” Abiding daily is only possible because every day God is ready to abide in us.
