Ephesians 2:14 | Our Peace
Ephesians 2:14 NIV says, “For he himself is our peace.”
While this is a shortened portion of a larger point Paul makes to the church in Ephesus, I want to focus on this simple message. This truth is enough for today.
The opposite of peace is conflict, discord, and tension. A lack of peace is directly connected to a separation from God. Consider that any “peace” that comes from a source other than the very presence of God is false peace.
Pleasure is not peace.
Success is not peace.
Security is not peace.
Comfort is not peace.
Peace is only found in the presence of God because God is peace.
Paul writes in Ephesians 2 about the hostility between God and us. He reminds us in Ephesians 2:12 about who we were before Christ, saying, “at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.”
It is only because Christ took on the curse of the cross that he was able to destroy the barrier between God and us. Recognize that you are living in a moment in time where nothing is stopping you from encountering God and living in his peace. Yes, until the coming of Christ, there was a barrier to knowing God intimately, much less being filled with his glorious presence.
We have no barrier to God but our rejection of his promise. So often, I have missed out on God’s presence in my life, not because he would not allow it but because I turned away. I’m convicted today not to take his presence lightly. I’m gripped today not to forget that his sacrifice on the cross is the only reason I can have true peace.
Will you join me in recognizing our free invitation to come to the Lord? Will you join me in embracing the one and only way to peace? Will you respond to the sacrifice of Christ by drawing near to God and honoring the gift of his presence?
Not for the works we have done but because of the one work he has done. We stand in God’s grace–living in his peace, longing for more of him, waiting for his return. Remember, one day, you will look Peace in the eyes, but don’t wait. While he is not here with us fully, his glory is rising up in the hearts of those who believe.
Come to the one who is our peace. Come to Jesus.
