Psalm 18:35 | God’s Help

Psalm 18:35 says, “You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supported me, and your gentleness made me great.”

There are so many astoundingly good promises in Psalm 18 that it is hard to pick just one. I encourage you to pause today and read through this entire chapter. Read it slowly and intentionally, as every promise is like nutrients to your soul.

How many other things do we could as the key to greatness? Our culture sees success, wealth, talent, and fame as the keys to success, but the Kingdom of God tells us a totally different story.

To be great in the Kingdom of God, you must be intimately close to a gentle God.

Can you see the posture that David had to take to receive God’s path to greatness? In humility, he took up the shield of salvation that God gave him. He hid himself under the strong right hand of God.

Greatness is not far off for the believer. It is not something we strive our way into. We don’t work our way into greatness. We rest our way into greatness.

Do you want to be great in faith? Get closer to God. It may seem upside down, but the greatest Christians are the ones who receive the most from God. God gives freely to all who ask without measure. John 3:34 ESV says, “For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.”

God will always give more than we can receive. That is just how good he is! He has so much capacity for generosity and help that the only state we can ever realistically live in is not full but overflowing.

All of this comes back to the reverse kingdom we live in. Greatness belongs to those who become like children. To those who become dependent on God for protection and strength.

Where do you see yourself today? Are you trying to get God’s attention by impressing him with your religiosity? Are you afraid of his rejection? Are you ashamed of your failures and letdowns? All of these paths lead to burnout and pain, but they are all redeemed in the gentle generosity of God.

Pause and meditate on today's verses and ask God to help you receive his grace.
