Psalm 18:31 | The Rock
Psalm 18:31 ESV says, “For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God?”
Take a moment and try to pinpoint where you have been putting your trust lately. Is all your hope in the Lord, or are you splitting your faith among different sources? This verse is a vital tool in realigning our lives under the lordship of God.
The first question is perhaps an odd question at first. The point is not that God is God, but that this God (Yahweh) is the God. The one that we worship and serve can be identified as a particular entity, a divine spirit, and that God is God. That means that no one else and nothing else can take that place. This simple truth is worth meditating on. It can straighten our faith when we begin to waver and put our hope in other things.
I love the language of the rock. This second question describes what kind of God we serve. He is faithful.
There are many reliable resources we can use to build a strong foundation. Most obviously, wealth can stabilize our lives significantly, but money is temporary. In the same way, knowledge and wisdom are essential factors in finding success, but eternal life is not dependent on the things we know.
When we consider the faithfulness of God, we have to look beyond our context. God is more faithful than the most loyal friend. His steadfast love endures through all generations. His word is true beyond time and space. Even when heaven and earth pass away, his words remain.
As you meditate on these words and ask your soul these two critical questions, recognize how vast and unsearchable this God is. He is the definition of steadfast. He is the only God and the only true hope.
Amen.
