Taking The Risk

For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.
— Psalm 86:5

God is more good, forgiving, and loving than we know. Even so, we cannot discover this character independent of our relationship with God. God's nature is continually revealed as we call on him and interact with him. It is not enough to know about God, speculating about what he is like. Our testimonies of God's faithfulness are what carry us in times of need.

We will never know the extent of his grace to us until we call out to him. God uses these moments of need for his glory in ways that we cannot experience in any other moment. If we are content and without any need, we cannot experience God's grace and goodness.

We need a good God. We need a forgiving God. We definitely need a God that abounds in steadfast love (those words will always hit me).

The way I see it, we have two options. We can either hide our problems from God or bring him into our mess. If we hide our issues, we demonstrate that we do not trust him with our imperfections. We offer God an incomplete version of ourselves. And while God knows fully where we have been and what we have done, our relationship is hindered when we hide.

If we bring God into our trouble, we risk being let down by God. Have you ever held back from praying to God because you did not want to be disappointed? God understands our weakness, and he is not condemning of our fears, but he boldly brings us into deeper levels of trust when we let him into those vulnerable places of our lives.

At the end of the day, we can read a verse like Psalm 86:5 and intellectually recognize that these attributes describe the God to whom we are devoted. We can let it be head knowledge, but it does no good to know about God being forgiving if we never confess our sin and need for him.

It is much better to encounter a verse like this and carry testimony after testimony of how God has been good, forgiving, and loving to you? This only happens when we take the risk to open up to him and see for ourselves if he is able to bring us through into victory.
