Breathing Him In
“In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.”
I often remind myself in my prayers about this truth. So much of the emphasis in the story of Christianity that we tell is us getting to God. Whether we recognize it or not, we often shape our faith around our efforts to connect ourselves to the Lord. John reminds us of the truth that abiding is as much about God in us as it is us in God.
God desires for you to be abiding in him and for him to be abiding in you. It becomes a beautiful cycle of connection and intimacy that deepens in every breath.
This morning I practiced a simple meditation. Breathe in. You in me. Breathe out. Me in you.
It may be a new practice for you to participate in meditation, but scripture calls us many times to meditate on the law of the Lord. If you are willing to try this out, know that you are fixating on what Jesus said in John 14:20.
Learning to see abiding from the perspective of both I in you and you in me allows us to go deeper than we could if we just tried to do our devotions and live a good life. God wants to come close to you, infuse his love into your soul, and transform you. He wants to walk closely beside you in every moment and lead you by his spirit.
Ultimately, he wants to empower you beyond what you could have imagined into a life of fullness. Abiding in Christ in this way actually prepares us to be missional and kingdom-minded.
I want to invite you to try this simple meditative challenge today. Maybe you want to open up your bible to John 14:20. Breathe in and out and pray this prayer, asking God to speak to you and lead you.
Amen.
