Building Trust
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
As we enter into a time of prayer and seeking the Lord this morning, we are well aware of the dangers and suffering that others are facing across the world. In times of intense trial, verses like Psalm 56:3 are a gift of simplicity and power.
God is faithful to every word he speaks. It is one of the traits that make him God and no one else. There is none other that is completely faithful. Of course, we do not always understand what God is doing in the moment, but as we grow in our faith, we testify more and more of God’s faithfulness.
Many things hinder trust, but fear is one of the fiercest competitors of faith. When anxiety, danger, and threats arise, it is tempting to lose trust and begin reacting to the situation. No matter what we turn to, we are ultimately putting our trust in something. Maybe we are placing our trust in some experience, substance, or activity that promises to numb the pain. Perhaps we are putting our trust in ourselves and striving to control and manipulate a situation. It could be that we put our trust in another person, a leader, or a movement.
David got it right when he said he puts his trust in the Lord. God is the most steadfast place to put our trust! Jeremiah said the same thing in Jeremiah 17:7 ESV, saying, “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord.”
The challenge lies in the fact that God is unseen. He is spirit, so when we put our trust in him, it feels very risky at times. When dangers appear, fear begins to challenge the ability of God to deliver us. Remember, God’s hand is not too short to save. He can and will deliver his people from dangers. That does not mean all Christians are immune to all problems, but it means that we are never abandoned, never condemned, and never rejected.
This morning, I want to challenge you to pray along two lines. First, pray for those facing wars, dangers, and threats across the world. Seeing world conflicts on our TVs and mobile devices is a good reminder to pray for those in need, and the current situation in Ukraine calls for believers to step into prayer. Second, pray that God would show you how to put your trust in him, even amid fear. Building history with God in the secret place in the good times gives us greater confidence to choose him in the trial.
Amen.
