Think About Heaven

Colossians 3:2-3 NLT says, “Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.”

Colossians is an interesting letter full of truths about our identity in Christ. There is so much to draw out from the words Paul wrote here. If you have time this weekend, I encourage you to take about 15 minutes and read through all of Colossians.

Paul had finished a discussion about who we are in Christ. How Christ canceled the debt of our sin on the cross and how our sinful nature can be cut off through this power. He sets up a case for a life of freedom but then challenges the Colossians to look at their lives. Were they living in that freedom?

We can become distracted and stray from a life of holiness if we forget where our real life is located. It is not here on the earth where things decay. It is seated in heavenly places with Christ Jesus. As children of God, we have a home in heaven with Jesus. Our future is eternal glory. Even glory to glory.

In every moment of our lives, God is speaking by his Spirit. He shows us where to look, what to perceive, and how to act. Believers who live connected to God’s Spirit will abide in the glory and power that he carries. These Christians hold anticipation in every moment to see the Kingdom of Heaven break into a situation and bring hope.

If we fix our eyes on the world around us, we will not only miss these opportunities, but we will be deaf to them. We become deaf when we lose sight of Christ. I cannot claim to know the balance between God’s grace and our discipline, but I know we need both. So I will strive to have as much grace and discipline as possible so that I can live in the Kingdom and not in the flesh.

Some reading this understand what it means to walk in the spirit. Others may find this kind of language intangible, which is okay. God is patient with all of us as we grow. We all hear from God in different and unique ways. The point is not to feel shame for your lack of closeness to God. I want you to feel the desire to be closer to God. I pray that God fills you with hope to see him more clearly.

Start by thinking about heaven. What is God up to? What does heaven say about a situation I am facing? Allow these pondering thoughts to impact your day.
