Psalm 121:1-2 | Look Up

Psalm 121:1-2 NIV says, “I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

Take a moment and consider where your help is coming from. For many believers, the majority of their life is self-supplied. We have so many fantastic resources and blessings that it can be hard to imagine anything in our day-to-day life that is dependent on the Lord. Eventually, the only moments we find ourselves looking to God for help are in emergencies.

Yet God desires an abiding relationship with his people that grows in intimacy and connection. God wants to be our source of help every day because we discover the wonder of God’s kingdom in our dependence on him.

We live in Illinois, so there are no mountains (hardly any hills) for me to compare this verse to. I remember when I drove to Denver in high school. The magnitude of those mountains was astonishing. You could see them hours before reaching their base. Unchanging, unmoving, powerful, uncompromising, strong. These words come to mind when I think of those mountains. They are an image of God’s help.

Something shifts in our faith journey when we genuinely believe that the help God provides is better than the earthly resources we can supply. Joy starts overtaking our lives when we realize that the provision of an unseen God, is more sure than the provision of a job.

Perhaps the best gift of this verse is the single-minded desperation. The writer poses a question: where does my help come from? I like to imagine myself on a journey to Jerusalem with the mountains surrounding me. I look up to those monuments and declare, “My help comes from the Lord.”

He is the Maker of heaven and earth. He is the one who designed all of this and set it into motion. He is able.

Amen.
