Psalm 18:28 | Light My Lamp

Sometimes in our lives, it feels like the darkness is closing in all around us. Maybe you feel this way today or in this season of life. Where do we turn? How do we respond to hopelessness and gloom?

Saying that we can just turn to God is not wrong, but sometimes the simplicity of that reality is hard to grasp. Sometimes the truth doesn’t feel all that helpful amid our pain. No one wants someone coming into their grief explaining why it’s no big deal. Just ask Job.

Yet the truth of God’s salvation is more than a remedy or a nice encouragement. It is a reality that God repeatedly demonstrates as he watches over his people. If you are stuck in the darkness, the truth is that God can light it up. He can bring hope into the darkest situations.

I love that God does not demand us to feel a certain way just because of the truth. He can be a good God, and you can feel confused or frustrated about your situation. The whole basis of overcoming sin and the flesh is pursuing the truth of the spirit even when the flesh feels like sinning.

That is why in the middle of a storm, there is hardly a better prayer to pray than Psalm 18:28 ESV, which says, “For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness.”

Abiding is easy when everything is quaint and set in place. For me, it would be a cool autumn morning in a cabin in the woods, drinking a cup of coffee in the morning with Jesus while my family sleeps in. I can barely think of a more peaceful place for me to meet with God. But abiding truth is only real and meaningful if it can withstand the storm.

You don’t have to feel it to declare it. Our relationship with God grows deeper when we can stand on his truth regardless of what we see. We can learn to proclaim the truth that God brings light into our darkness before we see the first spark of hope.
