Don’t Forget
“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.”
—Psalm 103:2 ESV
God is worthy of worship just because he is God. His beauty, glory, and majesty are awe-inspiring enough to justify praise. Yet worship for the believer also flows from recognizing the works of God. Psalm 46:8 ESV says, “Come, behold the works of the Lord, how he has brought desolations on the earth.”
God’s activity on the earth and in our lives makes our response of worship personalized and distinct. We get to come into worship with a deeper why.
Why do you worship the Lord? Psalm 124:1-2 sets us up with the proper response.“If it had not been the Lord who was on our side— let Israel now say—if it had not been the Lord who was on our side when people rose up against us…”
God’s activity in our lives to save and redeem us is the only way we really have the freedom to worship him in the first place! His redemptive, saving, and healing work in our lives brings us to a place of wholeness where we can begin giving back praise.
It’s so easy to forget.
We can get fixated on the things around us and lose sight of what God has done, is doing, and has promised to do. Consider this: if God has ever been worthy of worship, he will always be worthy of worship. If God will ever be worthy of worship, he is worthy of worship now. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait around for him to be worthy of worship. His works speak for themselves that God is worthy. Still, he will continue for ages to come to do good works toward his people and uphold his righteous promises of life everlasting.
So don’t forget what God has done today. If worship seems like a chore, it is a sign your heart has forgotten what God has done. Take the time to remember his faithfulness. Pull out an older journal from 2016 and flip through the pages to recall the testimonies of God’s goodness. Scroll to the back of your photo album on your phone and remember how God was working in your life years and years ago.
Remember his works, and praise the Lord.
God, I remember the ways you have been faithful and good, and I am overwhelmed. You are worthy of all of my worship. Amen.
