I Sought The Lord

“I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.” —Psalm 34:4 ESV

Fear has no place in the presence of God.

One of the greatest promises God gives is the promise of his presence. God abides with us through the highs and the lows. Through pain and suffering, he is with us, right by our side. In hardship and trial, his presence goes with us.

For some reason, God uses trials to conform us to his image and character. He prunes us and disciplines us so we can grow into maturity.

However, when it comes to fear, we can stand assured that God has promised to deliver us from it. Nothing can be gained in God’s kingdom from any fear but the fear of the Lord (a different type of fear). Fear only exists outside of God’s truth and love.

Certainly, dangers and threats are real and rational. There’s no reason to believe God wants us to be foolishly fearless and live recklessly! That wouldn’t even make sense.

Read these promises of God overcoming fear:

  • “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?” —Psalm 56:3-4 ESV

  • “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” —Psalm 23:4

  • “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” —Isaiah 41:13 NIV

  • “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear…” —Psalm 46:1-2a

Notice how, in every verse, God promises that in our response to his presence, all fear is gone. The truth is that there will be many times in life when fear rises, valid or not, and God cares about delivering his people from fear.

Receive this blessed promise today that God will deliver you from all fear in the power of his presence. You may still have to face the enemy. You might still have to walk in the valley. But God will be with you, filling you with confidence, peace, and trust.

Seek him in your fears and let your life be the Psalm 34:4 testimony: “I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.”

God, I seek you today in whatever I face. I thank you for the times when I feel secure. I know that when I am afraid, I can seek you and trust you to deliver me. You have all of my fears. I receive your strength today. Amen.
