Why Worry?
In Matthew 6:27 NLT, Jesus asks us an important question, “Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?”
Sometimes we wholeheartedly believe the answer is yes. But worry is a sure way to undo faith and a distraction from the truth of who God is as our Father who provides. Don’t get me wrong. There are times when I worry. I don’t think anyone can escape the temptation to worry altogether. Just like with the testing of our faith, increased pressure, trial, or loss can pull the rug out from under our feet. There is always more to grow in our faith.
I am so glad that Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6 not to worry. He points to the birds and the lilies. Are they concerned with the food they will eat? Are they worried about the clothes they will wear? Of course, flowers don’t eat food or dress up for the day, but they depend on the sunlight to bring the energy they need.
I don’t think that the people in Jesus’s time would have understood photosynthesis, but being farmers, they would have surely known the importance of sunlight.
God’s faithfulness is akin to the assurance of the morning sun.
Would you stay up all night worrying about whether the sun will come up tomorrow? Even if you did every night, the sun would still rise at the right time every morning. Worrying won’t change that timeline in the least.
In the same way, worry won’t change the course of your life. You can’t speed up the trial by worrying—if anything, you’ll slow it down. God knows what you need, and he is faithfully providing it. That is all we need to know to move forward with faith.
We all need to return to the invitation to trust God and relinquish our worry.
Put your faith in the Lord today.
